Northern Virginia FC Ranked Fifth Best North American ClubRoyals and Majestics Y-League Jump in 2008 Rankings

United Soccer Leagues announced today the preliminary Super Y-League First and Second 11 Club rankings for the 2008 season, recognizing the league’s top competitive and administrative clubs. Northern Virginia FC surged upwards on the First 11 Club ranking, nabbing the Royals and Majestics program the fifth best Super Y-League club in North America.

The release of the list precedes the 10th Annual Super Y-League North American Finals, where all but five of the 37 clubs in the rankings will be competing for 10 championships that are up-for-grabs beginning Friday, November 21. The clubs will also be recognized during USL’s Annual General Meeting, the second half of USL’s SoccerFest, which is held in conjunction with the North American Finals in downtown Tampa.

Northern Virginia Football Club, comprised of both the Northern Virginia Royals (male) and Northern Virginia Majestics (female) USL teams, is represented by the club record of both thirty-two players in SYL ODP Camp pool and five teams in the 2008 North American Finals. Nineteen players from the Royals and thirteen players from the Majestics Super Y-League programs comprise Northern Virginia’s representation.

Northern Virginia FC previously earned the number ten spot on the 2007 First 11 Club rankings released in last October. The U14 Royals, U17 Royals, U16 Royals, and U16 Majestics had all previously qualified for the chance at a North American title to garner last year’s honors.
The Super Y-League launched the First and Second 11 Ranking System in 2005 with the top clubs ranked from 1-22 in three categories: overall, boys and girls. The extensive growth of the USL Super-20 League in the past three seasons has led to the inclusion of the under-20 league in the ranking process. The rankings are based primarily upon the on-field results. Winning percentage accounts for 70 percent of the score while minimum standards and operations complete the other 30 percent.

“The criteria used to rank these clubs is basic yet essential to the Super Y-League’s philosophy of providing a professionalized atmosphere for the top youth players in North America,” said USL Senior Director of Youth League Development, Jeff McRaney. “United Soccer Leagues wanted a way to salute those clubs who consistently succeed not only on the field but off the field as well.”
